We have encountered hepatomegaly and pronounced elevation of liver enzymes AST and ALT in four patients with type 1 diabetes. Her physical examination was unremarkable. The action of the liver plays an important role in its glucose-lowering effect, suggesting that glibenclamide also exerts a direct effect on liver enzyme activities. Type 2 diabetes was diagnosed if a fasting plasma glucose level was >or=126 mg/dl or if participants were taking oral hypoglycemic medications or insulin. Male Wistar rats were administered P.rheedii (250 mg/kg) orally for 21 days and blood glucose level was measured weekly. Results: 365 agreed to sign an informed consent. In overweight women the progestogen-only contraceptive implant may need to be removed earlier than the licensed three years.
