November is American Diabetes Awareness Month. Diabetes is a major risk factor for cataract, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy, which is the most severe of the three eye diseases which affects approximately 7.7 million Americans. Of all the diabetes cases, only 5-10 percent of individuals with diabetes suffer from type 1. This year’s® theme, Eat Well America!SM, reflects my goal – offering simple steps that are appealing to everyday people so that Americans can feel their best now and enjoy long-term health—whether they have diabetes or hope to prevent developing type 2 diabetes. Another 86 million Americans have prediabetes and are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes. When you take care of your diabetes, you’ll feel better. The ADA also notes that 86 million people over the age of 20 have pre-diabetes, a number that continues to grow every year.
