Is coconut water worth the splurge?

The water of tender coconut is the most nutritious wholesome beverage that the nature has provided for the people. Plus, it supports the thyroid function, aids in proper digestion, and stabilizes blood glucose levels. BUT I do enjoy coconuts!! Boil well and strain before drinking. Coconut oil & olive oil, both have their individual uses when it comes to the kitchen. Hence, not only does it taste great, maple water offers an array of health benefits. Breast milk is another.

That’s only 12 cups of coconut water – which would have 72 grams of sugar. Keep in mind however that all high-fat foods and oils are calorically dense and simply adding in more calorically dense food to a diet already ample in calories is not likely to result in weight loss. Coconut water contains a high level of potassium – 294 mg per 100 ml and drinking coconut water regularly can help regulate the blood pressure levels in these individuals. The important thing to remember is that the whole coconut

Vitamin D for Healing Wounds – Advanced Tissue

The present study is aimed at determining the bacteria involved in leg ulcers and their resistance patterns to commonly used antibiotics as well as to determine whether Aloe Vera has antibacterial activity against multi-drug resistant organisms and promotes wound healing. Often severe pain interferes with treatment protocols because patients are unwilling or unable to comply with necessary regimens. Traumatic wounds could be a result of falls, accidents, fights, bites or weapons. A chronic wound may be defined as one that is physiologically impaired because of inadequate angiogenesis, impaired innervation, or impaired cellular migration among other reasons [4]. A large, red “butterfly” shaped wound on the sacrum was recorded on post-operative day three although no measurements were made. In our opinion, the application of autologous in vitro expanded fibroblasts is a satisfactory therapeutic option to treat large leg ulcers and is particularly indicated in patients with chronic

Metabolic Syndrome: An Occupational Perspective

Rapid urbanisation has led African women to have an obesity prevalence double than that of Caucasian women, and this also holds true for the stroke prevalence in Africans. However, in 2005, the American Diabetes Association and the European Association for the Study of Diabetes jointly stated that no existing definition of the metabolic syndrome meets the criteria of a syndrome, and there have been endless debates on the pros and cons of using the concept of this syndrome. After more than four hours fasting, we found no statistical significant association between time since the last meal and HDL cholesterol. Accepted December 16, 2015. Subjects who consumed at least one alcoholic beverage per month were assigned to the drinker category. The emerging prevalence data during the current decade suggest that MS is quite prevalent worldwide, especially among older people, with gender-specific disparities. 2011: 29 (1) :41-5.

Long Acting Native GLP-1 formulations for Type 1 Diabetes

GLP-1 receptor agonists have antihypertensive properties, explained via release of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) as shown in mice (1). RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS Eight type 1 diabetic patients with (+), eight without (−) residual β-cell function, and eight healthy matched control subjects were studied during a mixed meal with concomitant infusion of GLP-1 (1.2 pmol/kg/min), saline, or exendin 9–39 (300 pmol/kg/min). In the partial pancreatectomy (Ppx) model, exogenous Ex-4 promotes islet regeneration, leading to sustained improvement in glucose tolerance. Western blot and immunohistochemical analyses were performed for expression and co-localisation studies. GLP-1 exerts its effects through the interaction with GLP-1 receptor expressed in the pancreatic islets, lung, hypothalamus, stomach, heart and kidney. In type 1 diabetic patients without endogenous insulin secretion, GLP-1 decreases the glucagon secretion as well as the arginine-induced glucagon response during hyperglycemia

Diabetic Eye Disease – Don’t Go Blind from Diabetes : David Khorram MD : 9780980053111

People diagnosed with type 2 diabetes must confront the troubling reality that they face a greater likelihood of heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, and other serious ills down the road. At age 25, Audrey was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa and continued to work as a nurse for 30 years with her visual impairment. Diabetes can cause cataracts and damage to the retina. It was mostly my fault. Having linked with former Def Jam executive Bill Adler, the 52-year-old Dre, whose given name is Andre Brown, is in the process of putting together a reality television series to chronicle his recovery and lifestyle transition. The retina is the light-sensitive area at the back of your eye which receives light from the lens of your eye and sends signals to the optic nerve. Ryno’s regular vet did not have much experience with canine diabetes but was able to diagnose the condition and start the dog on Humulin.

For National Diabetes Month, NIH urges actions to reach health goals

Description: Rated as one of the top ten journals in healthcare administration, Medical Care is devoted to all aspects of the administration and delivery of healthcare. American Diabetes Association goals (for hemoglobin A1c, blood pressure, and lipid levels) were defined by 2008 American Diabetes Association guidelines. Body mass index (kg/m2) Therapeutic goal is 5–10% loss for people overweight or obese with type 2 diabetes. The majority of patients expressed their healthcare goals in a social and functional language, in contrast to the biomedical language of risk factor control and complication prevention, even when specifically asked about goals for diabetes mellitus care. Average A1C levels were 8.3% for the 1724 children ranging in age from 8 to 12, 8.6% for the 2854 participants between the ages of 13 and 18 and 8.4% for the 1382 young adults aged 19 to 25. Results suggested that patients in the QI strategy group were twice as likely to achieve combined diabetes care goals

Innovative diabetes cost-reduction strategies

Diabetes is the fastest-growing chronic disease in the U.S., but experts says there is a relatively simple and inexpensive way to reduce the soaring cost of treating it: Get patients to take better care of their feet. Costs were estimated using detailed data on resource use and Medicare payment methodologies. Data were collected by reviewing the medical record of each patient for the whole year. The annual number of visits of these diabetic patients was 6.2% of the total outpatient visits of all patients due to all causes during the one-year study period. In contrast, an economic model predicts that intensive therapy, as compared with conventional therapy, could reduce blindness from 34 to 20% or by 41%, end-stage renal disease from 24 to 7% or by 71%, and lower-extremity amputations from 7 to 4% or by 43%. Diabetes-related costs accounted for 33.8% of all-cause costs (mean cost per patient = $4583). Additionally, people with diabetes used services related to mental

Serum Amyloid A, C-Reactive Protein, and Retinal Microvascular Changes in Hypertensive Diabetic and Nondiabetic Individuals

IAPP has been postulated to have a role as a modulating factor in glucose homoeostasis and to be involved in the pathophysiology of diabetes. There are approximately 2000 beta-cells per islet, and approximately one million islets of Langerhans scattered throughout the pancreas. Frequently they form fibers or plaques whose presence is correlated with the pathology for many diseases, including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and type II diabetes. Total insulin secretion per 180 min was elevated by 30% in GDM patients (35 +/- 3 pmol/l) versus control subjects (27 +/- 1 pmol/l) (P < 0.05), but increased even more (190-250%) in obese insulin-resistant women, compared with all other groups (68 +/- 7 pmol/l, P < 0.0005). Moving walls are generally represented in years. In this review, we particularly focus on hIAPP structure, hIAPP aggregation, and hIAPP-membrane interactions. The area under the glucose curve in response to an intraperitoneal glucose challenge (1 g/kg body weight) was larger in hIAPPxGKKO mice than in hIAPP transgenic mice at 3, 6, and 12 months of age (P < 0.005) and in GKKO mice compared with hIAPP transgenic mice at 6 and 12 months of age (P < 0.005). The results are of interest with respect to the mechanism of amyloid formation. Ketoprofen is similarly ineffective at inhibiting amylin amyloid formation.
