The purpose of this review is to describe the prevalence of psychological distress in parents of children with type 1 diabetes (T1DM), the relationship between parental psychological distress and health outcomes, and parents’ psychological experience of having a child with T1DM. Seventy-eight children and adolescents with Type 1 diabetes and their mothers performed standardized tests to assess psychometric intelligence. Diabetic children and sibling control groups were balanced in terms of BMI, waist circumference (WC), and blood pressure (BP). In addition, there was a positive correlation between PI and C-CSC (r=0.3, p=0.02). The 25(OH)D levels of patients whose serum samples were taken in summer and spring months were significantly different (p < 0.05). There were no significant correlations between 25(OH)D level and daily insulin dose. Although we could not show a significant association between vitamin D deficiency and metabolic parameters, the frequency of vitamin D deficiency in T1D children is substantial. Genomic DNA was extracted from whole blood samples using the QIAamp DNA Blood Mini Kit (QIAGEN®), following manufacturer's instructions.
