The Connection between PAD and Diabetes

Every year, approximately 150,000 Americans undergo a foot or leg amputation due to complications arising from peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) concludes that the current evidence is insufficient to assess the balance of benefits and harms of screening for peripheral artery disease (PAD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk assessment with the ankle-brachial index (ABI) in adults (Table 1). Among African adult diabetic populations, screening and diagnosis of PAD is frequently suboptimal. Main outcome measure was amputation-free survival measured from time of initial revascularization procedure to 24 months, stratified by race and hospital referral region (HRR). The mean age of participants was 66.5 (SD 10.1) years. In terms of lipid profiles, triglyceride was the only significant variable. Patients may see both a vascular surgeon and a podiatrist in the same visit.

Women aged < 75 years had, independently of diabetes status, at least a 38% (P < 0.05) higher mortality than their male counterparts after adjustment for socio-economic status and co-morbid conditions. Among the several risk factors already established, type 2 diabetes is now considered as one of the important risks in progression of liver cancer. We included randomized clinical trials reporting the effects of ACEI and ARB regimens for DM on all-cause mortality, CV deaths, and major CV events with an observation period of at least 12 months. The main finding was that doctors varied enormously in the way in which diabetes mellitus was mentioned on the death certificate: not at all, as a contributory cause of death, or as an underlying cause of death. The proportion of deaths where diabetes was stated as the underlying cause in relation to the total of diabetes deaths was calculated globally and categorized by sex and age groups.
