Depression is prevalent in patients with diabetes. This article is based on the presentations and discussions during an international meeting on diabetes and depression convened by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) in collaboration with the National Institute of Mental Health and the Dialogue on Diabetes and Depression. A systematic review was conducted to identify published literature on the epidemiology of diabetes and depression. RESULTS—Over 8 years (83,624 person-years of follow-up), 1,925 deaths were documented, including 522 deaths from CHD. Type 2 DM, formerly called non-insulin-dependent DM, is an adult-onset disorder that begins with resistance to the effects of insulin.
