Association of diabetes with age-related macular degeneration in the EUREYE study. – PubMed

IMPORTANCE Understanding whether differences in the local availability of eye care professionals are related to differences in realized access to eye care is important for assessing whether and where public health efforts are needed to increase access to eye care professionals. Glaucoma leads to blindness by damaging the optic nerve. Subject age ranged from 60 to 93 years with a meanof 69.5 years ± 7.1(S.D.). This month, researchers from Harvard Medical School and the University of Crete in Greece have published findings from a small phase 1/2 clinical trial in which 10 out of 23 subjects with dry AMD who were given high doses of the cholesterol-lowering drug Lipitor showed regression of drusen deposits (a buildup of waste materials beneath the retina, explained below) and demonstrated some improvements in visual acuity. The Macular Degeneration Association, Inc. The vast majority of cases of macular degeneration are the dry type, in which there is thinning or deterioration of the tissues of the macula or the formation of abnormal yellow deposits called drusen. HumanWare makes a wide variety of products for low vision – from portable magnifiers, desktop units and transportable products for sustained reading.

Many older people develop macular degeneration as part of the body’s natural aging process. In wet AMD, abnormal blood vessels grow beneath the macula and disturb the overlying structures leading to decreased vision and distortion of objects. Subjects with AMD grades 1 to 3 or GA had no increased odds for diabetes compared with those without AMD. They can diagnose retinal problems in their earliest stages, when there are no outward signs. In dry AMD, physicians often see soft, lipid-rich drusen in the outer retina, similar to the build-up of lipid material in the inner walls of blood vessels in atherosclerosis.
